365996: The Back-to-School Book, Grades 3-6 The Back-to-School Book, Grades 3-6
By Suzanne Kaback / Scholastic Teaching

The beginning of the school year is a critical time. What happens in the first month has a huge impact on the ones that follow. That's why Suzy Kaback, Connie Perry, and Brenda Power wrote The Back-to-School Book, the only book of its kind to address the academic, social, and developmental needs of students in grades 3-6. More than a collection of activities and icebreakers, The Back-to-School Book targets core beliefs that need to be fostered in the first weeks of school for students to thrive throughout the year: Organizing the classroom to support your goals Reaching out to families early and often Establishing routines that promote independence Creating a safe, respectful, and caring community Communicating in ways that boost learning Setting the stage for academic success across the curriculum The authors also provide a wealth of resources-reproducible record-keeping forms, sample parent letters, ideas for bulletin boards, book displays, and games for getting to know one another.

  • Book Worms - Create a book list consisting of your students' favorite books. Each week, you can read "Bob's" story or "Lisa's" story. If the children are old enough, consider having them read their favorite book to the class!
  • A Bag Full of Me - Introduce yourself to your class in a new way this year! Put a few items that represent you in a large paper sack. You could put in a favorite book, food, CD, pictures of family and friends, and anything else that symbolizes your interests and hobbies. Explain the significance of each item to the students as you pull it out of the bag. This discussion helps the kids get to know you as a person! Then give each child a turn to bring in his/her own bag so that everyone in the class can get to know each other!
  • The Toilet Paper Ice-Breaker - Another fun way to break the ice! Pass around a roll of toilet tissue without telling your students what they will be using it for. Explain that they should tear off as much as they need. Each student counts the amount of squares he/she tore off and then in a group each student tell us one thing about him/herself for each square of toilet tissue. The children will love it!
  • Homework Worksheet - Since homework will be an important part of your students' learning and school routine, help them plan ahead to make it (a little) easier! Print out a form similar to the one below for all your students. Once completed, make a copy for the student and keep a copy for your records.
